On Wednesday, the 31st of July 2019, Theatre Arts Department of College of Education Warri, celebrated the 4th Theatre Arts Festival, tagged FESTAD 2019.
This festival which has become an annual event in the Department was initiated in 2016 by the then Head of Department, Mr Cecil Ozobeme. The maiden edition took place that year.
It was indeed a festival which celebrated what Theatre Arts performance represents. There were practical displays of various genres of dances, songs, comedies and drama. 'Ijataha' was the title of the Drama performed by the final year students, and it was written by Dr Oghenevize Umukoro, a lecturer in the Department.
The festival was graced by the Provost, Prof. Mrs Mary Olire Edema, Dean School of Languages, Mrs Elizabeth Agbada, lecturers of Theatre Arts Department, some College staff, parents, friends of the Department, students and well wishers.
The Head of Department, Prince Uchenna Chinye Osamor, in his speech said that the festival is not only entertaining but also artistically and academically refreshing, and structured for relaxation and enjoyment. He listed the achievements and challenges of the Department. He thanked the Provost for her efforts towards the accreditation of the Department in 2017 and her efforts in moving the Department to greater heights.
The Provost, in her address, congratulated and appreciated the Head of Department and other lecturers in the Department, for putting out such a wonderful show. She commended the Theatre Arts lecturers for the peace and harmony in the Department. She also acknowledged the keen interest and concerns they show towards their students, praying that other lecturers would emulate them.
The highlight of the festival was the conferment of the Honorary Thespian award to the Provost. The award was in recognition of her outstanding support and contributions to the Department. After the award was conferred on the Provost, she was requested to do a dance, which she did to the delight of all present.
