The Library of the College of Education, Warri, was established in 1979 the same year the college was founded, and was cited at Ihogbe, Benin City Edo State under the leadership of late Prof. Ambrose Alli, the then Governor of Bendel State. In February 1980 he directed that the institution be moved to a temporary site (Hussy College) Warri. as work was in progress at the permanent site at Edjeba Warri.
The College Library occupied a building West of the campus at the far end between the central administrative block and the academic blocks. The library building was made up of two large halls, two rooms between them, serving as offices, and two work rooms. The large hall to the left of the building housed the circulation unit, the reserve unit and the main book stocks for various discipline as well as a reading space capable of accommodating one hundred and fifty (150) studies. The volumes of books in the collection was about 6,193 and journal were one hundred (100) in number. The library materials then were organized using the Dewey Decimal Classification Scheme.
The first head of the library was Mr. William Ochuko Onakpoya. On his retirement, Dr (Mrs) Awale-ale I. I came on board as Acting Librarian for a short while; by 2005 She became a substantive librarian. Before she emerged as librarian the college library has moved to the college permanent site and was occupying a temporary space in the science block. This was under the administrative leadership of Prof. Igho Joe as Provost who also in his capacity supervised the movement of all other departments to the permanent site at Edjeba, Warri.
In May 2007, the library moved into its present permanent building which was commissioned by Dr. Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan the then governor of Delta state on Saturday 13th October 2007.
Meanwhile, Dr. (Mrs) I. I. Awala-ale as the first substantive College Librarian tenure, spans from 2005 to 2015. During her tenure, the Division (Department) in the library increased tremendously; which include:
* Readers’ Services Division
* Collection Development Division
* Administrative Division
* Serial Services Division
* System Division.
There was also increased in the number of staff ranging from professionals, para professional to non professional.
In the strive for a standardized college library, the volume of books was not left out as it also increased from one hundred and fifty (150) to Forty four thousand six hundred and fifty eight (44,658) while journals also increased from one hundred (100) to Five hundred and ninety six (590).
Now, the books in the library are arranged by subject using the library of congress classification scheme (LC) which is peculiar of all academic libraries.
The present head of the library is Mrs. U. D Aghoghovwia, who is on acting capacity. She took over from Mr. Egreajena Dennis who retired meritoriously on the 12th of November 2018.
