COEASU Organises an Orientation Exercise and Second Academic Workshop

On Wednesday, 13 September 2023. The College of  Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) in conjunction with the College Management organised an Orientation Excercise for the ’99’ Academic set and new Academic Staff. The 2nd Academic Workshop for  all its members was also held the same day.

The Provost of the College Dr. Dickson O. Oyovwi (JP) was present as well as the Deputy Provost, Dr. (Mrs.) Fidelia Ighrakpata; the Registrar, Mr. Anomioghene Afure Joe; College Librarian, Dr. Nelson Edewor; the Chairman COEASU, College of Education, Mosogar, Comrade Richard Igbunu and other members of the Union. 

The Provost of the College in his opening speech, welcomed everyone present at the workshop. He thanked the Union for organising the workshop, stating that the excercise was timely. Also in his address, he stated that there is more to the lecturing job than just teaching. He advised lecturers to distinguish themselves by carrying out quality research and community service, which are part of the responsibilities of a lecturer. He mentioned that the workshop will educate and make a difference in the lives of all the lecturers who are determined to discharge their academic duties. He charged everyone to take the workshop seriously and to benefit from the resource persons who will be speaking.    

The Chairman of the Union, Comrade (Dr.) Oghenevize Umukoro in his welcome address, appreciated the Provost of the College for the opportunity given to organise the Orientation exercise and the Academic workshop. He mentioned that it was the first time the Union  was carrying out  an orientation exercise for its new members, and it became necessary to enlighten its members on what the Union is all about, so that as members of the Union, they can understand their rights and privileges. The first orientation paper was presented by Comrade O.E Isitoah, a renowned Unionist and  a one time Chairman of the Union. The topic of his presentation was knowing the Union. He educated participants of significant aspects of COEASU trade union….. starting with its historical background, to logo, objectives, regulatory bodies, membership, financial implications, benefits and others. The second paper presentation was by the incumbent COEASU Chaiman. His paper was titled ‘Rights and Privileges of Members’. In his presentation, he stated that as an Academic staff, one needs to know his/her rights /privileges. He mentioned that academic staff has different privileges which includes; Tefunds Academic interventions, which enables one to receive funds to further his/her education, sabbatical leave, soft loans, welfare packages, non-signing of the time book and others. He also added that Academic Staff are expected to maintain integrity, avoid embarrassment and obey rules and regulations of the College . 

The theme of the workshop was ‘WORK ETHICS, PUBLISHING & ELEVATION IN THE WORK PLACE. During the workshop, Comrade S. Azugbene the Union Chairman emeritus presented a paper titled: Ethical Code of Conduct for  Teaching Staff, while Dr. Blessing Akarue presented a paper on ‘Academic Publication’. Also Comrade (Dr.) O. Umukoro spoke briefly on ‘Elevation in the Work Place’.

The Orientation and Workshop were insightful as well as educational. Congratulations to the Union Executives in organising the maiden orientation for its members and for the success of the exercise.
