The Grand Opening of Students Hostel in College of Education, Warri

On Saturday, 27th January, 2024, history was made in the College of Education, Warri, as the  Stephen Hostel, named after  the pioneer Registrar ( Mr. Stephen Onwo) of the institution was commissioned.

Members of the State House of Assembly and dignitaries from across the State stormed the College of Education Warri for the event. Notable guest at the ceremony included the Chairman, State Board of Internal Revenue, who doubled as the Chairman of the occasion, Hon. Solomon Ighrakpata; the Chairman of the College Governing Council, Hon. (Mrs.) Shola Diabo; State House of Assembly Committee Chairman on Education, Hon. Charles Emetulu, and Hon. Ferguson Onwo, also a member of  the Delta State House of Assembly. Other members of the House of assembly were also present  as well as the College Provost, Dr. Dickson Oyovwi and other principal and management staff of the College.

The Provost, Dr. Dickson Oyovwi on behalf of the Management, welcomed the dignitaries  to the commissioning of the first hall of residence for students on campus after over forty years of establishment of the College. In his welcome address, he appealed to the Honorable Commissioner to provide accommodation  for the staff on campus, especially for the junior staff in order to reduce the ever increasing cost of living. He also appealed to the State Governor, His Excellency, RT. Honorable Elder Sheriff Francis Oborevwori to help in the completion of the College Administrative Block which has been abandoned for years. He appreciated the immediate past Provost, Prof. (Mrs.) Mary Olire Edema and Council, for the role they played in the actualization of the hostel project. He also appreciated Honorable Ferguson Onwo, for influencing IGNOWET Services to partner with the College, and he called on other well meaning Nigerians to come join hands on developing the College.

The Chairman of the occasion, Hon. Solomon Ighrakpata, in his speech, appreciated the past and sitting Provost who were part of the hostel project. He also appreciated the Onwo family for their influence in the hostel project,  and thanked the College Management for a work well done. Also, he appealed to IGNOWET  to make the rent affordable for the students to live in, advising the students to make the hostel like their own property.

The Council Chairman, Hon. Shola Diabo in her address, appealed to the Honorable members of the House of assembly to help in domestication of dual mode in order for NCE students to be able to transit into the degree programme without having to go through stress of entering the Conventional University. She appreciated the hostel developers  for naming the Hostel after the Pioneer Registrar, and appealed to the students to maintain and manage the hostel well.

The Project Manager of IGNOWET, Hon. Clement Aduze, spoke about the architectural structure of the building , the benefit of the hostel to the college community and other external works yet to be done, such as canteen building, concrete walkways and so on, that will make the hostel more conducive for residents.

The Chairman, House Committee on Education, in his address, stated that anything that will bring progress to the educational sector in Delta State will be pursued. He congratulated the Governing Council, Management, Staff and Students and appealed to the students to manage the hostel properly.

There was a dance presentation by the Theatre/Music department which added fun to the event.

The commissioning was done by the Chairman of the College Council, and guests were given a tour of the Hostel.
